Sometimes when I'm listening to a soundtrack, all I'm seeking is a brief escape...a slight respite from the hustle and bustle of daily activities. With MoveScore Media's release of A Ticket to Space, that type of welcome escape is exactly what I was treated to. And it was an imaginative one at that.
A Ticket to Space will take listeners on an interstellar trek through a variety of entertaining cues. For sure, this is a score that delivers science fiction music as it was intended and that is through melody, imagination, and energy. For fans of this genre who have been less than satisfied with the representation of classic sci-fi fare, this is a golden opportunity to rekindle that positive energy and to enjoy an impressive score.
Though a comedy, the composer scored this one with a serious approach to off play the humor. A wise choice by composer Erwann Kermorvant. The album begins with a brief overture that sets the tone for the experience. For the first portion of the soundtrack, there were many indicators that this was a special type of score as the momentum that it developed was quite impressive. The originality quotient is rather high too, even though the score keeps a familiar tone about it. It's a classic example of originality within familiar bounds and further accentuates the fact that original music can be created within established perameters. I feel it's just a matter if embracing it.
The only drawback that I picked up from this album is a shift in energy that takes place toward the second half of the album. There is a brief lull in which some of the slower, suspenseful tones of the score emerge to pace the underscore. but these moments are easily absorbed. In fact, I think the first twenty minutes of the album spoiled me.
In all, there is much to like about this release. It seems as though these types of soundtrack outings come about more and more from the international scene where filmmakers seem to be embracing strong, thematic scores as opposed to standard temp music inspirations. Thanks to MovieScore Media for making such options available for us.
Final Score: Expand your horizons and punch your Ticket to Space! It's a soundtrack that stands above much of what I have heard in 2010 and it should appeal to a broad range of soundtrack fans (even though it's sci-fi).
