About the Soundtrack: Milan Records currently plans on making available an assortment of titles from its catalogue that have been unavailable for quite some time.  One of these titles, Cho Young Wook ’s score for Old Boy, was released in January 2010 and can be purchased via a digital download from Milan.  The film itself is about an ordinary Seoul businessman who, after a drunken night on the town, is locked up in a strange, private “prison” for 15 years.  In some ways, it's a movie that has become a cult classic and had featured a score that quite a few music fans were interested in acquiring.

What You Need to Know: I found Old Boy to be a warm and  beautiful soundtrack experience and one that had a settling effect going for it. Truly, this one was a pleasant surprise for me and I am pleased that Milan decided to get this album out there.  It's no wonder why listeners in some of the soundtrack circles were greeting this with such pep.

Upon listening to it, I was taken aback by the subtle beauty the music offered and by the crafty blend of modern and classical inspirations within the score.  I would even venture to say that this is perhaps one of the most entertaining soundtracks I have heard in quite a while that features predominantly "underscore" material.  Certainly, there have been many scores that settles into the backdrop of a movie and fails to engage.  Well, the music of Old Boy locks you up along with the main character and will sway your emotions.  This is music that, while not outwardly expressive, will win you over with its heartfelt motifs...it's human qualities.

Perhaps the best compliment that I may give this score is that it has put me in a frame of mind where I want to see this movie...and soon!  That's what good music does, it hooks you in, tells a story, and in the end, will make you want to explore.  Young Wook does that here and his work should help remind us (or at least me) there is still classic works yet to be discovered.  Kudos to Milan for ushering this Old Boy out to us. Let's see what gems are next in line!

Final Score: Refreshingly engaging and offering just the right balance of emotional punch, Old Boy is a fantastic score that is  worth adding to your digital collection.  Like me, I hope you will discover it to be a great find.
