What You Need to Know: What a better world this would be if Christopher Gordon worked on more films. His style typically offers engaging, professional works that offers climactic moments in just the right spots. Such is the case with
Daybreakers, a film that blends the vampire genre with that of science fiction, and in doing so, has generated reasonable response from critics. Christopher's score is a key reason for its success, giving the film an unmistakable, identifiable gothic tone and a driving intensity that helps establish the core of the film. I really enjoyed this soundtrack.
The music of Daybreakers will call on a bit a patience from you; there are atmospheric moments strategically placed throughout the score's running time that may be a touch challenging for you to sift through. What makes this soundtrack special, however, are the peaks, not its valleys. Christopher's originality comes through with each and every highlight, from his use of horns to the driving intensity of the percussions. There are also interesting choral elements he's implemented that will instill a bit of fright in you. Indeed, this is one immersing soundtrack experience.
While listening to this, there were often moments that I wished certain tracks wouldn't end (such as cues 14 and 15). If you remember, I often criticize cues of an extended length since I often feel the welcome, as it were, gets to be worn out. Not so here; the music builds up to a climax and often delivers, which makes the entire experience worthwhile. Daybreakers is simply an engrossing and interesting score, not a typical horror movie soundtrack, and certainly not a generic Hollywood temp score effort. If you are a fan of composers who have a mastery of the orchestra and a sensibility for originality, than tune in to Christopher Gordon. His score for Daybreakers is but one example of his special abilities.
