James Horner steps up and delivers a score that is reminiscent of his glory days from the 80s and 90s with "The Legend of Zorro." It's the kind of complete score that I've waited quite a while for from Horner, and he brings it forth with zest and energy.
The key to the success of this score, in my opinion, is that Horner is able to draw on existing themes directly from the first installment, thereby eliminating the curse of the copycat music he so often employs. This time, it's perfectly fine to re-use existing themes since this is a sequel, which makes it appropriate and effective. Since this style is pre-determined, it seems that Horner was less distracted in borrowing elements from unrelated scores to other movies he has worked on and focused primarily on extending the soundscape of the Zorro series. This proves to be very beneficial.
All the themes from the predecessor are present and accounted for. Even the 'horse chase' sequence is revised and updated, with a variation that is actually original! The main Zorro theme itself, full of heroic ethnic heritage, remains heroic and even sounds a bit more sharp and full than the first album.
Spanning 15 tracks, this disc offers a very linear sounding balance that keeps up a consistent energy throughout. I think even the fringe Horner fans, those most offended by his style (which I am too, at times) should tip the cap and state that this score works on many levels, even if the movie itself was lackluster. It should also be noted that the running time on the disc is unusual since it is well over 70 minutes and that's just fine for this one. Horner keeps things lively and playful, and even returns to showcasing his knack for writing spirited action cues with an integrated themes.
Additionally, fans of Miklos Rozsa will especially enjoy the "El Cid" feel that the music gives off. More respect than copying, the music in Zorro pays homage and delivers quality in its own right.
Final Score: Horner reclaims his spark, and creates a score that is memorable and fully charged -- it's absolutely worth checking out!
