"Time of the Wolf"
Composed by John Scott

Audio Clips: Injured Wolf | Time of the Wolf

In the soundtrack world, I am often surprised by how many gems can be unearthed by those who seek it. "Time of the Wolf", a 2002 film featuring a score from the veteran composer, John Scott, is just that; a gem. While not readily available at the local music store, a special order on this one proved to be fruitful. It's a quality score, and has a lot of old school style that will remind the listener of the orchestral glory days.

To be honest, I've never heard of this film before the soundtrack purchase. Using the my Scorenotes instincts, I purchased it after reading the movie description, thinking it offered fertile ground for a composer of Scott's ability to craft something nifty. And he did!

The music offers a lot of pleasant overtones, charm, and a really nice theme for the Wolf. This gentle and stirring motif emerges about halfway through the album (and there are 40 tracks! nice!!) and really integrates memorably throughout the second half of the album.

As mentioned above, there are 40 tracks on this album. It's a generous tally, but don't be overwhelmed' many of the cues are brief and do not pass the 2 minute mark.

While there is a bit of underscore that proves to be efficient for the film and not so accessible for the listener, the overall quality of the soundtracks is hard to refuse. Scott delivers a quiet success, and lets you take a trip back in time when the movies that were being made were a bit more, well, innocent and charming. A false nostalgia, maybe, but these are the emotions that emerged after listening to this score.

Final Score: Certainly above average compared to the majority of current (2005) score releases at present. With hints of a western and a taste of adventure, "Time of the Wolf" is worth not only the wolf's time, but yours as well!
