"The Punisher" (score album)
Composed by Carlo Siliotto Audio Clip: The Punisher
"The Punisher" is a small little wonder from Marvel Films. Filmed on the backbone of the comic book character, Frank Castle, the movie struck a nice note between camp and drama. What makes it even better, though, is the score, which somehow balances a grim world of murder and mayhem and hope for a better future, all in one motif.
While not even given a widespread release, this is a soundtrack that could make a nice addition to one’s collection. Carlo Siliotto is the man behind the music, and his orchestral writing delivers a smooth listening experience.
I’m a big fan of thematic material, both in a written story and within a soundtrack. Siliotto bases his work on a main theme that is beautiful in its simplicity. It does not feature the fanfare of a superhero as we know it, and that is why I may like it so. It takes a different, unconventional turn from the Spidermans and the Batmans of the comic universe. It’s scored seriously, with real world tonality and emotion.
The recurring theme is prevalent within the entire score, and is not overbearing with how it us used. The secondary theme, composed for the villains of the movie, is more or less what is expected of a comic book tapestry of music. It’s naturally dark, a bit over the top, and perfectly placed as it plays off of the main theme.
If you’re up for marches, swift action music, and noisy sound effects, then you ought to avoid this. Instead, here you will find a melodic score, with a few idle moments, but with enough substance to keep you listening. Many times, some scores drift off and become engaged in a long, withdrawn underscore. Siliotto does just enough to avoid that chasm, and brings out a quality effort that makes me hope he may have another opportunity at this Hollywood game soon.
Please note, that the review above focuses in on the score only album, and fans should be attentive enough to avert the rock album that the movie also produced.
