Steve Burke Interview

Now this is the kind of music that first got me interested in soundtracks.  "Kameo: Elements of Power" by Steve Burke is nothing less than a hidden gem that should be unearthed by anyone who calls themselves a film music fan.  Granted, this is a soundtrack to a video game, but you'd never be able to tell that by listening to it.  It has consistency, originality and energy.  The scope is simply breathtaking and inspiring.

Burke's writing is magnificent from start to finish.  Paced by the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (the musicians behind many of the Silva Screen projects), "Kameo" is a rousing effort to behold.  Here you have an exciting main theme, excellent orchestration, and some very effective mood sequences -- sequences that makes you feel as if you are exploring strange new worlds (which in fact you are if playing the video game).  Of significant note are tracks 13 and 21, both of which explode with fine tuned action marches and melodic structure.  I find a lot of action music these days to be too repetitive or sloppy in its composition.  Not the case here; not by a long shot.

This find continues to solidify my stance that the better music in the entertainment industry is coming out of orchestral video games than major motion pictures.  For one, the composers are given room to breathe and create in a venue such as this while the cinematic world ties them up with either rigid structures or uninspired work.

Additionally, there are 27 tracks to partake in.  While some of them are excerpts that last only 30 seconds or so, there is enough music on the album to make it a quality purchase.  With the exclusion of just a small handful of tracks, the music is orchestral and in some lucky moments, backed up by the Kings Choir.

In summary, I want to offer kudos to Mr. Burke.  He really stepped up and inspired me with his musical voice. In fact, he's surpassed the efforts of many notable big name composers with this offering. Indeed, I'd put this one up against any film score.

Final Score: If you seek a refreshing charge of originality and escapism, "Kameo" will be more than happy to oblige. This soundtrack is a bold, sensational gem!
