Jarhead is a movie that most have dismissed as simply a film without any payoff. After listening to the soundtrack for it, I can say the same thing about the score.
Thomas Newman's precision and style are absorbed into a mostly experimental sounding brand of music. There is a unique identity to his music, I will give him that, but as an isolated listening experience, there is very little to find engaging or moving.
Newman travels the spectrum of sound design with his middle-eastern fused electronics. There wasn't a moment during my listening experience that I felt like this style of music was working for me. One track seemed to bleed right into the next the whole way through. The end result is a compilation of cues that never really stand out. Personally, I was hoping for something a bit more dramatic given the subject matter and the film's landscape, but alas, it wasn't meant to be. The frustating part of this dilemma is that Newman has the skill set to create music that is far more impactful than this.
Additionally with this soundtrack, you will be able to relive the early 90's with song selections from that era. Ironically, that was some of the best moments of the soundtrack. You know a score is doomed if 'Naughty By Nature' offers one of the best tracks on the disc!
Perhaps I may be coming across too harsh on the music. Realistically, I can see how the texture of the score probably fit in well with the movie itself. I just keep coming back to the listening experience and asking myself if I enjoyed the score enough to want to listen to it again.
