The Highlander series lives on with, "Highlander: The Source."

In an early look at the music from the upcoming film (slated for a Fall 2007 release), soundtrack fans are introduced to Composer George Kallis, who was asked to take on the mantle of developing the music for a rebirth of the film series.  While the movies of this franchise have not all been commercial and critical successes, we music fans have enjoyed a few nice scores as a result of it.  Most notably, "Highlander: EndGame" and the original installment, "Highlander," which used the pairing of Michael Kamen and the rock band Queen to create  vibrant selections of music.  While none of these films have personally won me over, I will acknowledge that these two scores are ones that I enjoy listening to and should stand as the highlights of the musical pantheon from Highlander.

Well, now you can add another one to that list.

"Highlander: The Source" is a tremendously entertaining body of work.  Kallis has been able to combine the elements of good vs. evil in a very compact, fluid style of music that keeps the listener engaged.  I was particularly pleased with the heroic nature of the new Highlander theme, which I can say is as enjoyable as any that this series has featured.  What's keen about it is how the theme creates an uplifting feeling while also offering a melodic nod toward the Scottish origins of the MacLeod character, making for a dynamic blend that really sticks with you.  It's as if one can hear an echo through generations of Highlanders.   Excellent fare!

Other key components of this soundtrack are the robust action cues, delivered with a particular zest and energy that is also impressive in its own right.  When Kallis gets the orchestra rolling, it's an unstoppable flow that produces genuine excitement.  These moments are intense without ever falling off balance.  And speaking of balance,  Kallis makes great use of the piano to bring home sentimental moments of reflection to the story.  Add to that the use of unique instrumentation and strategic electronic effects and you have yourself a very well rounded, interesting score.

Ultimately, the mark of a great soundtrack is one that you can't wait to listen to again.  I can honestly say that "Highlander: The Source" is the first score I've listened to on back-to-back occasions in a long time, thus letting you know how enthusiastic I am about this material.  This is a first-rate soundtrack that will bring attention to the bright future of George Kallis, and deservedly so.

As I mentioned earlier in the review, this is an early glimpse of the score and it will not be available until a bit later this year.  It will be accessible for purchase from iTunes and other reputable sources when released.  Stay alert for this one as this is a soundtrack you will not want to miss.

Final Score: George Kallis ignites the next installment in the Highlander series with grace, offering music that is evenly balanced, engaging and downright fun to listen to. It's a spark that the series will benefit from.

Grade: A-

  • George Kallis conducted an 80-piece orchestra for the score, performed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra.
  • The score had to be delivered within 6 weeks, which meant that 85 minutes of music had to be composed within that time frame. The composer refers to the experience as "enjoyable but intense."
  • It was determined that the film required an epic yet modern score, incorporating orchestral, electronic and modern rock elements.
  • Some of the recording sessions were attended by Adrian Paul, the star of the film.
  • Highlander: The Source was directed by Brett Leonard
