A new version of "Charlotte's Web" features composer Danny Elfman in charge of delivering the score for the film. To preface this review, Elfman's work typically leaves me on the outside looking in as much of his music leaves me with very little impact. It's hard to explain. His work is typically well developed, offering a blend of melody and uniqueness, yet his themes fail to reach me.
With Danny Elfman's version of "Charlotte's Web," this is also the case.
As a whole. the music is befitting the subject matter, and in fact, takes on a classical tone to it. Perhaps this might be due to Elfman's recent symphonic venture that could have spurred him on in this direction. No matter the inspirations, the classical, symphonic tones of certain cues (e.g. - "The Plan Begins") is what I enjoyed the most on this soundtrack. When the music takes a more conventional turn, which accounts for most of the score, it provides some easy listening and light fare to engage in, but nothing beyond that. While score is indeed well done, I simply couldn't connect with it.
In dealing with the impact of the music, I couldn't determine any one track that distinguished itself from the next. It's a consistent effort but in my soundtracks, I typically like to have 2 to 3 standout cues that highlight the score. The opening titles on this disc are nice but it's not anything we haven't heard before. While I appreciate the musical voice that each composer offers, I do also look for a bit of freshness with each ensuing project.
Given the story line of the book (and film), I did expect to be moved by a more emotional bit of musical work. Instead, we're left with a score that is well done and grants the film an efficient background element, not one that raises it to another level.
Final Score: Danny Elfman fans will enjoy "Charlotte's Web" as will listeners who enjoy a brand of light, easy going melodies. While this is perfectly suitable, it's not an effort that ignites my personal interests.
